When an addict or alcoholic first enters recovery, it’s always recommended to find a sponsor once you start attending twelve-step meetings. However, many people don’t know the first thing about finding a sponsor. It’s an important decision that should not be taken lightly because a sponsor will offer crucial guidance and support during the early recovery period. You’ll need help in getting through the twelve steps, and that’s what they are here for.
What are some of the things that you should look for in a sponsor? When seeking a sponsor for the first time there are a lot of things to consider. Sponsors are all very different, but they all have a common goal; to assist you in your recovery. Some sponsors are great communicators, some are not. This does not mean that they are both not equally as effective in encouragement and providing one-on-one support.
Is a Recovery Sponsor Important?
Another question that arises is whether you have to like your sponsor or not. There aren’t any rules that say that you must like your sponsor, but having some admiration and liking for the individual will create an easier way to accept what they have to say in relation to your recovery. If you dislike the person, then meeting up and communicating can quickly turn you off and you’ll be going down the wrong path in your recovery.
A good sponsor for you could be someone with whom you share things in common with; i.e. similar addiction, beliefs, fears and so on. You may feel that you do not need to explain things so far in depth with someone who shares your view. Albeit not absolutely necessary to have the same type of background to gain value from your relationship with your sponsor. You may possibly find that the better fit for you as someone that you do not have much in common with.
You should look for an individual that communicates well, acts in a respectful, helpful manner. Someone with a positive outlook and can assist you with the challenges of the short and long-term goals you wish to achieve. If you’re still using (or have a loved one that is), then the first step is to get sober before you look for a sponsor.
