How Long Do Drug Treatment Programs Last?
Drug treatment programs vary in length for a variety of reasons, including the patient’s medical and psychological condition, the patient’s financial and insurance situation, and the specific treatment philosophy of the drug rehab center the patient has chosen to attend. However, the most common addiction treatment programs last 30, 60, or 90 days.
While 30 and 60-day options may be a good choice for certain patients, experts suggest that a 90-day program has the greatest chance of being effective. 90-day programs give a patient more time to participate in activities, counseling, and other therapies – helping them to better learn the life skills that will keep them sober in the long run.
Inpatient vs. Outpatient Drug Rehab Programs
Most addiction treatment centers have both inpatient and outpatient rehab programs, each of which may be a good choice for patients in different stages of the addiction recovery process. Generally, however, it’s recommended that patients begin with an residential or inpatient rehabilitation program, as they have shown to be the most effective for long-term recovery.
Outpatient drug programs are usually best for patients who:
- Have already succeeded at an inpatient drug program
- Are at low risk for sudden drug relapse
- Are not suffering from a dual diagnosis for a coexisting disorder
- Need time outside rehab to take care of professional and family obligations
In comparison, inpatient drug programs are usually best for patients who:
- Are entering an addiction treatment program from detox
- Are at higher risk for a sudden drug relapse
- Have a dual diagnosis for a coexisting disorder
- Have not found success with previous addiction treatment programs
